Source Selection Process

As with the other assignment, this is a draft that will become a part of your final project. I will review what you submit only to make sure you have all the required elements. I will not be grading this assignment for specific content.

As you pull this assignment together, begin by reviewing the sources you have collected for your topic. Select the best sources for each category. Review the Final Project-Pathfinder checklist carefully (posted in the Syllabus). It describes each type and number of resources you should include. The sources you select to include in this assignment will be in your final Pathfinder.
Each source you intend to include in your Pathfinder should have an annotation and a complete and accurate MLA citation. You may need to edit your original assignments to incorporate feedback about corrections to your work. Please look in the discussion forums, your blog, and your saved emails for feedback. If your weekly assignments did not turn up appropriate sources--or if your topic has changed significantly, you may need to revisit some of the databases and library catalogs to find the most appropriate sources for your pathfinder.
Include annotations and citations for the following information sources in your assignment:
1. Reference -
o 2 articles from encyclopedias or other reference source. At least one must be from a subject/special encyclopedia. (Neither may be from Wikipedia). Other reference source can include a reference database, such as essays (not periodical articles) from Opposing Viewpoints and/or CQ Researcher, both available to you through the Seattle Central Community College library web site, under Reference Databases.
Encyclopedia :
“Social Protection.” Encyclopedia Britannia Online.2008. Encyclopedia Britannica Online. Seattle Central Community Coll. Lib. 5 Feb. 2008 <http://www.britannica.com/eb/article-250231>
The author of “Social Protection” is a Britannica writer and as Britannica is a scholarly encyclopedia series I must conclude that the information provided is scholarly and accurate. This article in the online encyclopedia provides information about the conflict in Darfur and gives information such as that genocide is occurring in Sudan and that the U.S. and other organizations internationally are attempting to help as well as providing some aid. The article also offers information as to how many people have become refugees due to the conflict and estimates of how many people have died because of genocide in Sudan. The article also provides information as to peace agreements that haven’t been kept (not all of them but some of them) and gives examples of things such as people being held hostage in lieu of these peace agreements. The article also provides information in regard to things such as the horrible circumstances that often times happen to people caught in the middle of these acts of genocide such as women being raped instead of killed or both as a way ethnic cleansing. This article is useful to my topic but it is a very broad article that gives me more ideas for things to research and is not the best for providing me with lots of information that is actually narrowing in on key things that become of interest after reading the article.

o Names and contact information for 2 organizations associated with your topic.
o One statistical source about your topic.
2. Books - 2.
Book:
Totten, Samuel & Eric Markunsun. Genocide in Darfur: Investigating the Atrocities in Sudan. New York. Taylor and Francis Group, 2006.
The book Genocide in Darfur: Investigating the Atrocities in Sudan was written by two men who have devoted their lives to studying historical genocide and writing numerous books on subjects such as the holocaust and finally this book together on the more recent subject of genocide in Darfur. This book is divided into five parts with many sub chapters in each part as well as citing numerous other works and providing an index and appendix. The five parts in the book cover the background on Darfur, the investigation on what has been going on in Sudan, the genocide determination, the significance of atrocities documentation project as well as the final part being on the analysis of the rational of the determination of genocide in Sudan. This book is very relevant to my topic as it provides a background and the reason behind what I am researching as well as providing current things that have occurred, the only unfortunate thing about this book is that it is two years old so it does not have every single thing that’s gone on in the past two years available to me.

3. Periodicals - 3 articles that you located using periodical databases. At least 1 must be from an academic/professional journal.
Hueschen, Christina. “New Attacks in West Darfur.” 24 Hours For Darfur 19 Feb. 2008 24 Hours For Darfur. 19 Feb. 2008 < http://24hoursfordarfur.org/blog/index.php/site/new_attacks_in_west_darfur/>

The site is a non profit research site with information that is current as well as previous information on the Darfur conflict. It was written by someone that has experience first hand in Darfur who gives us factual information about what countries are doing in retaliation to the conflict as well as what countries might be enabling the conflict to last even longer. The site was produced for people who are interested in learning about why the conflict is continuing in Darfur as well as who is helping to sustain Darfur (i.e.-China) and what some people and countries are doing to try to get China to stop sustaining the Darfur conflict, even if it is inadvertent.

4. Internet - 2 Web sites
5. Alternative Non-Print - 1 video or radio broadcast, interview, documentary.
Assessment Checklist:
a. Sources selected contribute to an understanding of your topic.
b. MLA Citation contains all of the required elements. Compare your work to the MLA Guide. Don't forget:
1. Author, article title, magazine or journal title, and publication information are correctly indicated.
2. Database name, company, date of access and URL is included for periodical articles.
3. Elements are in the correct order.
4. Elements are separated by the correct punctuation.
5. The first line of the citation is on the left margin.
6. Second and later lines are indented five spaces or citation is bulleted.
c. Annotations include all required elements, and are written in your own words. Annotations copied from sources will not receive any credit.
This assignment will serve as a draft of what will become a part of your final project. I will review what you submit only to make sure you have all the required elements but I will not comment on content. (I'll do that with your final version.)

Go to the Syllabus and review the requirements as listed in the "Final Project: The Pathfinder Checklist". Please complete all three parts shown below.
1. Revise the Introduction to your project you did in the "Research Plan" assignment to reflect the changes and adjustments you have made in the course of your research.

What is being done to aid the people of Darfur and what is being done that is inadvertently encouraging the Darfur conflict.
2. Go through your assignments, notes, and journals to prepare the Topic Analysis in which you:
o Identify the academic disciplines which are related to your research result. Include only the disciplines that relate to your approach to the topic.
Some of the academic disciplines which are related to my research results are history, anthropology and social studies.
· Create a list of the Library of Congress Subject Headings that was most effective in identifying relevant materials in library catalogs. (HINT: Examine the online catalog entries of some of the "best" books you identified. What is the subject headings assigned to your books? LCSH are subject terms; Library of Congress Classifications are letters assigned to books to help organize them on the shelves. )

A list of the Library of Congress Subject Headings and numbers that were most effective in identifying relevant materials are:

DT-History of Africa
DT 155-155.2 Sudan Ethnography
DT 155.3-147.67 History of Sudan
DT 159.6-159.9 Sudan Local History and Description
AE-General Works
AE-90 Encyclopedias
AN-Newspapers

· List the useful keywords and subject headings in retrieving relevant materials from indexes and databases.
Some useful keywords and subject headings in retrieving relevant materials from databases and indexes include aid in Darfur, NATO involvement in Sudan, Coalition for International Justice in Sudan, China in Darfur, Amnesty International and nonprofit aid in Sudan.
· List the most important databases and other periodical indexes.

The most important databases I have used that have yielded the best information for me include Infomine and ProQuest.

· Write a brief description (1 or 2 paragraphs) of your experience identifying keywords and subject headings (including LC subject headings)

My experience in identifying keywords and subject headings has gotten better as before I would post simple keywords like Darfur Conflict and not be met with what I was actually looking for as pretty much any and all news the correlates with the words Darfur Conflict isn’t guaranteed to tell me who is aiding in ending the conflict or who might be helping to fund that conflict, even if it is inadvertent. I have also found that naming specific organizations that are helping Darfur seems to lead me to more information about what is being done to aid in ending the conflict.

I also felt that it was helpful to write down things that I read about such as teens fundraising to help aid in ending genocide in Darfur and then searching the keywords “teen fundraising for aid in Darfur” and was met with information regarding their cause and help.
3. Write a three-paragraph essay on your research process in which you:
o Describe your strategies for finding information and how you overcame any challenges, such as too much or not enough information.
When I searched things in particular on databases and the web, in order to facilitate narrowing my results and finding information that was appropriately for my topic I used selective keywords as well as narrowing down what I was searching from determining whether I wanted a news article, an article from a scholarly journal or even narrowing down on certain databases whether I wanted complete articles or information on where to find certain articles and in what periodical I would locate them.
· Discuss the nature of your topic.
The nature of my topic is determining who if anyone is giving aid to stopping the Darfur conflict and whether these are entire countries or organizations or even just a group of people or single person that is working towards helping the people of Darfur as well as what countries and places are actually helping with all of their resources or just certain resources. And what countries are potentially helping the Sudanese economy to stay afloat and in essence continue in their war (i.e.-China).
· Discuss the kind of information you have found and speculate on how the nature of your topic affects the types of information available. Explain why you think this was the case. (For example, if your topic is very current, you may have found newspapers to be especially important sources. In this case, you might also explain what other sources, such as reference and books contributed.)
I’ve found the kind of information that has been most informative of my topic has been news websites and information pamphlets that allot me information from nonprofit organizations or people who are helping to end genocide in Darfur. I have also found in finding information about how China is helping to inadvertently fuel this war that news and other periodical resources seem to be the best venue for acquiring information especially news for up to date information.
· Describe any differences between what you expected to find and what you found to be most useful.
I accepted to find that reference books would be most relevant to my topic and though they provide good history of what has occurred in Darfur and the varying reasons for its initial conflict I have found that they offer little in the way of up to date information on aid in Darfur or for Darfur.
o Compare the Internet as an information resource with other information resources you found on your topic.
The internet as an information resource has been very helpful, although it was unable to give me print out pamphlets from organizations trying to help Darfur it has also been very helpful in finding the agencies, organizations and government information that tells me how and who to get a hold of in order to get the information that I need such as information pamphlets. It’s also been an excellent aid in the fact that there are periodical databases which offer me more options and areas to locate the news on my topic from more sources then what is available at an actual library (even academic libraries).

Week 7

This weeks assignments were fun to do, I really liked the final one on evaluating websites. It was also nice to be able and practice citing things, it's interesting because learning how to do so correctly depending on what it is I am citing will help in the long run. I had no idea until this class that there was a distinctive difference in citing things depending on if the were a scholarly journal, periodical, book or online and others. I'm looking forward to next weeks assignments esspecially because most of mine this week were done under the influence of Thera Flu due to a dire cold and what appears to be permenant stuffy nose.

Week 6 Blog

I felt that week six was quite a work load this week and felt a little taken aback by the length of time it took to complete the assignment "My Search Results" as I had to keep consulting my citation notes/power point, since I saved it. Unfortunately I'll be having to turn in my revised version tomorrow (a day late) as I seem to have lost it during my computer resotration that I had to do earlier today. The week wasn't bad at all as far as assignments, the only problems that I had were my own fault like my ability to manage time and not remembering that I had downloaded updates that would cause my computer to restart while I was typing.

So the only down side to this week were due to my own inability to think as clearly as I normally due.

Week 5 Blog

This week's assignements were rather fun for me as I have only cited my works in ABA form until this week learning MLA and I had no idea what an annotation was until this week. I thought it was a great week as far as learning things that I will deffinately hold onto and use in my future. This week was a letdown in regard to the discussion but I like your idea of meshing all of the groups into on, I think if the other groups fair as ours does then we should at least have six potential post to reply to aside from only two. I am little nervous that I didn't take the advice offered in the assignement folder of highlighting key things in our annotation crique but am hopeful that since it was optional I won't get docked points. All in all I thought it was an informative week.
